WoW Forever Hunter keeps its damage role but changes how shots, traps and pets fit together. Aimed Shot becomes available to every Hunter at level 20, traps work during combat, and pets gain stats from their owner's equipment. Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival support different combinations of companions, ranged attacks and melee tools. The official preview explains those choices; it does not establish a tested best build or pet ranking.
01
What changes in your ranged toolkit
Aimed Shot is a baseline ability rather than a reason to commit to one talent tree. Arcane Shot no longer shares its cooldown with Aimed Shot, while Multi-Shot now does share that cooldown. This changes which shots compete for the same opportunity and makes an old Classic sequence an unreliable starting template. Read the three current tooltips together before deciding which attack belongs on each button.
The class still has a close-range dead zone: Blizzard describes ranged abilities as unavailable within eight yards of an enemy. Survival adds tools for moving between ranged and melee combat, but the preview does not remove that distance restriction. A practical first exercise is to notice when an enemy crosses into that space and identify the abilities still available. That exercise teaches the confirmed restriction without claiming an optimized movement routine.
02
Using traps during combat
Traps can now be used during a fight, with the preview setting their cooldown at 30 seconds. Frost-based and Fire-based traps have separate cooldowns, giving those categories different timing relationships. Hunters still place traps at their own location rather than freely throwing them to a distant point. Your positioning therefore remains part of the trap's usefulness even though combat no longer prevents placement.
Survival offers additional trap changes instead of making every Hunter's traps identical. Entrapment activates when a trap triggers, with talent investment affecting the effect's duration rather than its trigger chance. Survivalist's Discipline reduces the cooldowns of traps and Deterrence, while Resourcefulness reduces mana costs for traps and melee abilities. Those descriptions identify what the talents change, but they do not prove which combination performs best in every encounter.
03
How pets work in Forever
Pet stats now improve with the Hunter's gear, and the preview says pets can no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats. Every family can learn Bite or Claw, sometimes both, and every family can learn Dive or Dash. Each family also has its own distinctive ability, so the family choice is about an actual mechanic rather than appearance alone. A pet may tank enemies in solo or small-group play, but the Hunter's combat role remains damage.
Foxes are a new pet family with Trickster's Dance, which increases the pet's dodge chance and attack speed temporarily. Other examples include Bear Swipe for multiple targets, Spider Web for immobilization and Cat Prowl for a stealth opening. Turtle Shell Shield trades attack speed for reduced incoming damage, while Wolf Furious Howl supports nearby party members' melee Attack Power. These examples show why a family can suit a particular task without establishing an overall best pet.
04
Beast Mastery and companion decisions
Beast Mastery deepens the connection between the Hunter and active companions. Focused Fire increases damage while the pet is present, and Endurance Training incorporates the former Thick Hide benefit to improve pet health and armor. Deadly Aspects also supports melee-oriented use of Aspect of the Beast. The tree therefore has interactions beyond simply telling a pet to attack and leaving its controls unattended.
Summon Hawk is a new 16-point milestone talent that deals an initial hit and brings in a temporary attacking Hawk. The preview allows two Hawks to be active simultaneously and links the ability's cooldown to Arcane Shot. Unleashed Fury and Ferocity also affect these summons, while Bestial Discipline adds Spirit-based mana regeneration during mana spending. Check those connections together before assuming a talent benefits only the permanent pet.
05
Marksmanship with or without a pet
Marksmanship keeps a strong ranged identity while adding a deliberate pet-free option. Lone Wolf is an 11-point milestone that increases attack damage when no pet is active. Careful Aim converts Intellect into melee and ranged Attack Power, so its gearing relationship is different from a talent that only adds a flat shot bonus. The existence of Lone Wolf confirms an alternative playstyle, not a universal reason to dismiss companions.
Trueshot Aura moves to the 21-point milestone, and Sniper Shot becomes the 31-point milestone. Sniper Shot is described as a long cast with extended range that also increases the range of subsequent shots. Rapid Killing rewards eligible kills with a stronger next shot, while Rapid Recuperation connects Serpent Sting and Rapid Killing to mana recovery. These mechanics favor understanding timing and resource use before looking for a final rotation.
06
Survival and melee options
Survival gives melee combat more support through talents such as Predator's Edge, Strider Kick and Lacerating Strikes. Predator's Edge improves melee critical damage and off-hand damage, while Strider Kick combines an instant weapon attack with a brief movement benefit. Lacerating Strikes adds a bleed to Mongoose Bite rather than replacing the entire ranged toolkit. A melee-oriented Hunter still needs to understand the distance and trap rules shared by the class.
Improved Tracking combines older creature-type talents into a damage bonus against the type currently being tracked. Expose Prey allows attacks against the Hunter's Mark target to activate Mongoose Bite without first dodging an attack. Resourcefulness also links critical strikes to mana regeneration while casting. These are specific reasons to inspect the updated tree instead of assuming a similarly named talent behaves as it did in another edition.
07
Choosing your first direction
Start with the question the three trees actually answer: do you want stronger companion interactions, ranged precision, or more trap and melee tools? Set pet attack and return controls where they are easy to reach, because an uncontrolled companion can create an unwanted encounter. Then read the weapon, distance and resource requirements of the abilities in your chosen direction. This is a learning checklist based on confirmed mechanics, rather than a claim about the fastest leveling path.
Class talents become available from level 10, and the official class series places Dual Specialization at level 40. A class trainer in a major city handles talent changes, including Legacy talents. That gives you a documented way to revisit a choice as the beta evolves. Respec prices, optimal point-by-point allocations, launch BiS and encounter-specific damage comparisons remain pending confirmation for this guide.

Sources and what still needs confirmation
This guide combines Blizzard's Hunter and Druid deep dive with the general class-system details in the official class series. The explanations describe the announced beta design and do not claim that every subsequent build behaves identically. Exact pet acquisition locations, recommended macros and a verified launch damage ranking remain pending confirmation. Consult the linked official source and current client tooltips before treating an announced mechanic as a tested final rule.
